The Reading 565 Atlantic only appeared in the 1941 catalog, although it became the most common S gauge locomotive built. It was the first locomotive to have the power collectors mounted on the tender.
Set 4111
It's thought that some left-over O gauge inventory was sold immediately after the war, before S gauge production was in full swing. This model of the 565 has tender trucks without journal boxes, which may indicate that it was produced in 1946.
| It's also the only locomotive connected to the tender with a screw, rather than just a pin. |
Chugging Tender
Here is an example of a chugging tender. The mechanism was made available in each of the various types of tender for separate purchase. The tender has its own pickup shoe to drive a motor. Although this particular model has been worked on, it still makes mostly just motor noise.
| There's little difference between the four-piece Atlantics. |
