For repair and maintenance of American Flyer trains, it's best to have a test track. Here's the one I came up with, for use with both S and O gauge locomotives. It has features not everybody will need, but it is convenient and can be hung from the ceiling when not in use.
It's about 4' long, powered with a 1½B transformer. There are both S and O gauge tracks, wired together.
There are two DPDT knife switches; the upper one switches between AC and DC, and the lower one switches direction for DC locomotives. You can see the small bridge rectifier attached to it. The red light is lit whenever voltage is applied to the track. It's also used for testing bulbs. The button is for testing S gauge operating cars. On the right, a terminal block for attaching accessories.
Also, a long two-wire cable with alligator clips, for applying power to a locomotive in the cradle, or to accessories.
